Petrol makes headlines, but diesel decides the price of your atta, sabzi and courier bill. Here is why the diesel line on OGRA's notification matters as much as your own fuel bill.
Diesel = the backbone of freight
Almost every truck moving cargo on the M-1, M-2 and N-5 runs on HSD. A PKR 10 per litre diesel hike adds roughly PKR 4,000–5,000 to the fuel cost of a Karachi → Lahore run, which trickles into freight rates and finally the shelf price.
Farming and food prices
Tractors, tube-wells and threshers run on diesel. Higher diesel raises the cost of wheat, sugarcane and rice production. Rural areas often feel the fuel shock faster than urban households.
Generators and small industry
During power outages, small factories run diesel generators. A sustained diesel rally raises the per-unit cost of stitched garments, plastic goods and bakery items.
What drivers can do
If you own a diesel SUV, plan long trips off-peak and use motorway cruise speeds around 90–100 km/h for peak diesel efficiency. Track your PKR/km with a calculator so you notice the moment your commute becomes uneconomical.
