Electric vehicles finally have real showroom presence in Pakistan. Depending on your electricity tariff, they can cost as little as PKR 6 per km — less than a third of a petrol sedan.
The base maths
A typical EV consumes 16 kWh per 100 km. At the residential slab of PKR 40 per kWh, that is PKR 6.4/km. A comparable petrol sedan at 12 km/L and PKR 285/L is around PKR 23.7/km.
Charging at peak vs off-peak
Time-of-use tariffs in K-Electric and DISCO areas mean off-peak charging (11pm–5am) can cut your per-km cost by 30–40%. Solar owners often report near-zero running cost.
Hidden and long-term costs
Battery replacement after 8–10 years is the biggest unknown. Current LFP packs are projected around PKR 900,000 – 1,400,000, but prices are falling ~10% per year.
Who should switch now
Households that drive over 60 km/day, have a garage and solar, and keep cars for 5+ years. Ride-hailing full-time drivers are the biggest potential winners.
